Introducing Cross-Polarization in Multi-Camera 3D Scanning

We've just updated our documentation with detailed instructions on implementing cross-polarization in your multi-camera 3D photogrammetry station. Whether you're scanning for digital humans, VFX, or gaming, this technique helps capturing clean, high-fidelity textures with minimal specular reflections.

Why Cross-Polarization?

Reflections are a common challenge in photogrammetry, causing inaccurate textures and disrupting 3D reconstruction. Cross-polarization eliminates these issues by filtering out glare and specular highlights, leaving you with pure diffuse textures that maintain fine details, true colors, and better surface accuracy.

How We're Doing It at Xangle

Our latest setup features a 110-camera array, using a hybrid approach:

  • 80 cameras in bounce lighting for natural skin tones.

  • 30 cameras with cross-polarization for glare-free texture acquisition.

  • Dual trigger setup within Xangle, allowing both datasets to be captured in a fraction of a second.

This hybrid method provides maximum flexibility, ensuring that both diffuse and specular data are available for post-processing.

What You’ll Need

Our step-by-step guide covers hardware setup, required polarizers, and the ideal flash configuration. Some key components:

  • Circular polarizers for cameras (we’re using 30 for this setup)

  • Linear polarizers for lights

  • Custom DIY holders for optimal filter placement
