Building an OBJ File from RAW Files in RealityCapture
This guide explains how to process the RAW photo set provided by the Xangle team, prepare it in Lightroom, and generate a .OBJ file in RealityCapture.
1. Process the RAW Files in Lightroom
- Import the RAW files into Adobe Lightroom Classic.
- Apply basic adjustments:
- Enable lens correction.
- Set white balance (keep consistent for all images).
- Adjust exposure only if necessary. Avoid over-processing.
- Remove chromatic aberration.
- Sync settings across all images so they remain uniform.
- Export as JPG (or PNG if required by the project) using these settings:
- Quality: 100
- Resolution: 300 ppi
- Color space: sRGB
- Size: Original dimensions
- Place the exported JPGs into a new folder dedicated to RealityCapture processing.
2. Create a New RealityCapture Project
- Open RealityCapture.
- Go to File → New.
- Save your project (
.rcproj) immediately in a working folder alongside your processed images.
3. Import Images
- Drag and drop the exported JPG folder into RealityCapture
OR click Workflow → Add Images to select them.
- Wait for all thumbnails to appear in the 1Ds view.
4. Align Images
- Click Workflow → Align Images.
- RealityCapture will analyze the images and calculate camera positions.
- After alignment:
- Verify in 3D view that all cameras are placed correctly.
- Ensure the sparse point cloud covers the entire subject.
- If cameras are unaligned, try:
- Removing low-quality images.
- Re-running Align Images.
5. Build the Mesh
- Go to Reconstruction settings and choose Normal Detail (or High Detail for more precision).
- Click Start to generate the mesh.
- Inspect the mesh for:
- Missing areas.
- Unwanted background geometry.
6. Clean the Mesh
- Switch to Scene 3D view.
- Use Selection Tools (lasso, rectangle, 3D brush) to select unwanted geometry.
- Press Delete to remove it.
- (Optional) Use Tools → Simplify Tool to reduce polygon count while retaining detail.
7. Generate Textures
- Go to Workflow → Texture.
- Set:
- Texture size: 8K or 16K (based on GPU capacity).
- Texture count: 1 for most subjects.
- Click Start to bake the texture.
8. Export the OBJ
- Go to Workflow → Export Model.
- Select Wavefront OBJ (.obj).
- Enable:
- Export mesh
- Export texture
- Choose the save location and name your file.
- Click Save. RealityCapture will output:
.OBJ(geometry).MTL(material definition).JPGor.PNG(texture)
9. Verify the Model
- Open the
.OBJin your preferred 3D software (Blender, Cinema 4D, etc.). - Check:
- Correct scale
- Proper texture mapping
- Clean geometry
Tip: If the model needs to match real-world dimensions, use RealityCapture’s scale tool before export by referencing a known measurement from the capture session.
